In Ayurvedic terminology, Nephritis is known as Vrikka shotha. It refers to the condition when there is inflammation of the kidneys.
The Symptoms
There are different types of Nephritis. Moreover, different symptoms appear at different stages of the ailment.
The most common sign of Nephritis is oedema in the face. It is characterized by the accumulation of excess fluid in body tissues, resulting in swelling. The root of the term is the Greek word ‘oideo’; it points to the process of swelling. This facial swelling is most prominent in the morning. And, as the day passes on, the swelling subsides.
The patient may vomit. Besides he/she may also suffer from diarrhoea, headache, abdominal pain, nausea and biliousness.
The amount of urine may be quite less. Moreover, it may contain blood or albumen. The moment such symptoms are noticed, immediately seek medical counselling.
Dietary Regimen
Never have sour items like curd and also fried food items.
Consume less salt.
Drink lots of water.
Other Regimen
Quit the couch potato habit.
Assume an active lifestyle.
Remain mentally active as well.
Walking is beneficial for the patients suffering from Nephritis.
But the patient should not move outdoors if they suffer from cold, fever or cough.
Address constipation at the initial stages. The patient should be given Triphala powder at bedtime. The dose is of one teaspoon. It can be mixed with either hot water or a cup of warm milk.
To increase the amount of urine, the patient should be tendered radish juice. The dose is of 300 ml. thrice daily. This is particularly beneficial for patients who have problems in urination.
Ensure that the patient gets sound sleep at night.
Complete rest is must for such people.
However, avoid catnaps. They may rob the patient of sleep at night.
Ayurvedic treatments
Ayurveda has two effective medicines to cure Nephritis. These are Suvarna vasanta malati and Punarnava mandoora.
Suvarna Vasanta Malati
Suvarna vasanta malati contains gold in the bhashma (dust) form. It is an antibiotic medication and cures inflammation.
Suvarna vasanta malati is prescribed for the patients suffering from chronic Nephritis and fever. The dose: 0.250 gm. twice daily.
Punarnava Mandoora
Punarnava mandoora is the most commonly prescribed Ayurvedic medication in such situations.
Punarnava mandoora is available across the counter in a powdery form.
The dose: One gram of the powder needs to be mixed with honey. It should be given to the patient thrice daily.
