Myopia refers to that condition of the eyes when a person has problems in identifying the objects located at a distance which a normal person can identify with his eyes. Myopia happens when the parallel rays transmitted by the objects remain focussed only in front of the retina.
CAUSES OF MYOPIA
Myopia generally happens because of abnormal refractivity of the visual media.
Myopia can also occur when there is a change in the curvature of the visual refracting surface.
WHO ARE PRONE TO MYOPIA?
If anyone suffers from nervous debility, chronic constipation and cold, they are prone to developing myopia.
USE OF SPECTACLES
More often than not, one can get rid of the problem with the use of spectacles. Such spectacles are prepared by experts. These spectacles have the concave type of lens (glasses) of the appropriate curvature.
But, the person will have to keep on using the spectacles. Hence, spectacles become a permanent companion of such patients.
PROGRESSIVE MYOPIA
Most of the patients, however, suffer from ‘progressive myopia‘. The morbidity keeps on increasing. Such persons experience a decrease in their eyesight up to a certain age in adulthood. It normally becomes static at around 20-25 years of age. But, till the eyesight becomes static, the patient needs to keep on changing his/her spectacles a number of times.
AYURVEDIC DEFINITION
Progressive Myopia is known in Ayurvedic terminology as Drishti Dosha.
MYOPIA SYMPTOMS
- The first common sign of a person developing the myopic syndrome is a blurred vision of items denoted on a screen or a black-board.
- The eyeballs may start paining and/or a feeling of heaviness may be there in the eyeballs.
- The patient may experience itching in and around the eyes.
- Water may ooze out of the eyes.
- The person may also difficulty in identifying a person a few paces away.
- They cannot keep on reading for a long period.
- As a result, the patient can suffer from headache.
- He/she may even suffer from insomnia or disturbed sleep at night.
DIETARY REGIMEN
Such patients should regularly have ghee prepared from cow’s milk.
WHAT NOT TO EAT
Never allow such persons to have fried items;
Avoid food items that cause nasal congestion as well as constipation;
They should stay away from all forms of sour and pungent food like curd, pickles and spices.
OTHER IMPORTANT POINTS
Take daily brisk morning walks for five kilometres.
Practise the Yogic asanas (exercises) specially prescribed for the eyes. Mention may be made of Sinhasana, for instance.
The patients should also daily practise Pranayama (breathing exercises), as well as the Yogic mediation postures.
Don’t remain awake late into the night.
SIGNIFICANT POINTERS FOR READING, WRITING, PAINTING COMPOSING IN COMPUTERS & NEEDLEWORK
1. Never read while lying down;
2. Read or write only when sitting down on a chair and by keeping the book or the exercise book on the table a comfortable height;
3. The book should be kept at a position which is comfortable for you to read the lines;
4. You should not be stretching the back too much; nor should you bend over too much at the neck or at the back while doing these actions;
5. Don’t write during night time;
6. If you work on the computer, use anti-glare glass on the monitor;
7. Refrain from doing painting or needlework as they put a lot of strain on the eyes.
PROPER LIGHTING MANDATORY
1. It is always advisable to read or write only in a well-illuminated room. Proper lighting is mandatory.
2. Moreover, the reading lamp or light should be falling on the table from your left side.
3. Adopt the correct posture while reading.
HOW NOT TO STRAIN THE EYES
1. Never strain your eyes.
2. Give rest to the eyes after reading or writing a few pages.
HERE’S AN EASY & HANDY EXERCISE
This handy eye exercise should be done in the following ways:
1. Close the eyes.
2. Don’t think of anything.
3. Now, put a slight pressure on the closed eyelids with your index and middle fingers.
4. This is done even as you use the thumbs to balance the other fingers and the hands.
5. Use a clockwise and then an anticlockwise motion to massage the eye muscles.
6. Do this easy exercise anytime you want or your eyes feel tired.
AYURVEDIC TREATMENTS
Ayurvedic treatment of Myopia proceeds on a two-pronged theory. First, this process stresses on regularising the bowel movements of the patient. Simultaneously, the treatment is also given to cure any chronic cold symptoms or condition in the patient.
Myopic patients suffering from cold conditions (including nasal congestion and fever) are prescribed Shadbindu taila.
Mentionably, Triphala powder is recommended for both the conditions: constipation as well as for cold.
SHADBINDU TAILA
Shadbindu taila is medicated oil. Shadbindu taila cures nasal congestion and cold.
The Preparation process : Shadbindu taila is prepared by mixing in prescribed ratios several other natural drugs with unadulterated mustard oil. The mixture is then boiled. Shadbindu taila is ready after the concoction cools down.
Inhalation procedure : The patient should deeply inhale the boiled oil early in the morning.
The Dose: After inhalation, each nostril should be given six drops of the cooled down oil (Shadbindu taila)
Note : At the beginning the inhalation process may cause a slight irritation in the nose. There may also be sneezing. These symptoms are sure signs of the affected nasal portions readily responding to the medication. Moreover, these symptoms will not appear with habitual use of Shadbindu taila.
TRIPHALA CURES COLD & CONSTIPATION
Triphala is an ideal natural purgative medication.
The Dose : One teaspoonful mixed in a cup of lukewarm milk. The patient should have it at bedtime.
Alternative means: Keep overnight a teaspoonful of the Triphala powder in a tumberful of water. Next morning, squeeze or filter out the liquid. Use the liquid as the medication. The filtered out water is used for washing the eyes.
THE MYOPIA MEDICATIONS
The four most effective and commonly Ayurvedic medication to treat Myopia is Chandrodaya Varti, Maha Triphala Ghrita, Saptamrita Lauha, and Yashti Madhu.
CHANDRODAYA VARTI
Chandrodaya Varti is a collyrium (a medication for the eye; in India the commonly used collyrium is ‘Kajal’). It even prevents the possibility relapse of Myopia once the condition is cured.
Chandrodaya Varti can be identified buy its typical shape. Its ends are tapered. The shape is round and shaped like a rod.
Preparation process : Rub Chandrodaya Varti dipped in honey on a plate. The resultant mixture is the collyrium.
Usage method : Gently apply the mixture over the eyes.
Note : Application of Chandrodaya Varti causes a bit of irritation in the eyes. As a result, there is watering from the eyes. However, the irritation and the watering syndrome disappear in about 10 minutes.
MAHA TRIPHALA GHRITA
Maha Triphala Ghrita is medicated ghee. Maha Triphala Ghrita checks progressive myopia. Maha Triphala Ghrita is prepared by boiling Triphala powder along with other drugs.
Preparation procedure: Use ghee prepared from cow’s milk. This ghee produces fast and optimum results. Mix one teaspoonful of Maha Triphala Ghrita with lukewarm milk.
The Dose: The patient should consume one teaspoonful of this ghee twice daily.
CONSTIPATION CURE WITH MAHA TRIPHALA GHRITA
If the patient is suffering from constipation, the dose of Maha Triphala Ghrita should be increased. In such abnormal situation, the dose of the medicated ghee should be augmented to six teaspoonfuls. The patient will then have to take thrice daily.
SAPTAMRITA LAUHA
Saptamrita Lauha is a compound medication. It is prescribed for those patients who suffer myopia due to nervous debility.
To prepare this medicine, the following items are used in a pre-determined ratio: Honey, ghee (prepared from cow’s milk), Lauha Bhasma, Yashti Madhu, and Triphala.
The Dose: One teaspoonful of this powder mixed with a cup of milk should be taken twice daily.
YASHTI MADHU
The fibrous root or rhizome of this plant known as Yashti Madhu is used for preparing the medication.
Preparation process: One teaspoonful mixed with half a teaspoon of pure ghee (prepared from cow’s milk) and a teaspoonful of honey.
The Dose: The patient should have this concoction on empty tummy once before breakfast and again in the evening before taking any tea.
