In Ayurvedic terminology, this condition of hoarseness in the voice is termed Svaraveda. It basically happens when there is inflammation of the throat including the larynx and the pharynx.
VOICE HOARSENESS SYMPTOMS
The usual symptoms of voice hoarseness are as follows: Difficulty in speaking; Pain in the throat while swallowing or even while speaking; Coated tongue; Cough and fever. Constipation aggravates the situation.
CAUSES OF VOICE HOARSENESS
More often than not, the primary cause of hoarseness in voice is infection of the larynx and pharynx. Other main causes of this condition are tuberculosis; and other lung infections; It may also happen if some foreign material gets stuck in the throat. Any abnormal growth may cause voice hoarseness as well. Last but not the least is the frequent consumption of exceedingly cold or hot drinks.
DIETARY & OTHER REGIMEN
First and foremost, shield your throat from cold wind and cold water.
Second, don’t bathe till the symptoms subside and you get cured completely.
Third, stay away from cold and sour food items, and curd.
Fourth, consume as much as possible ghee, dry grapes, pepper and ginger.
Fifth, gulp down a teaspoonful of pure mustard oil after having breakfast. It restores the voice and soothes the throat as well.
NOTE: If any small bone(s) of fish get stuck in the throat while having the fish item, immediately have the patient gulp down (absolutely without munching) a spoonful of raw parboiled rice. It will bring about instant relief by dislodging the stuck fish bone from the throat.
AYURVEDIC TREATMENTS
Ayurveda has the four medications to cure voice hoarseness. These are dry hot fomentation, Haritaki, Eladi vati (Khadiradi vati), Irimedadi taila and the powdery mixture of Vacha and Yashtimadhu.
DRY HOT FOMENATATION
The patient must regularly go for dry hot fomentation. It aids the recovery procedure.
HARITAKI
Constipation accentuates the voice hoarseness syndrome. So right at the initial stages steps must be initiated to cure constipation. Hatitaki is the ideal medication to cure constipation. It is to be taken in the dose of a teaspoonful with hot water at bedtime.
ELADI VATI
Eladi vati is also known as Khadiradi vati. This pill needs to be chewed in a leisurely manner. It cures hoarseness.
IRIMEDADI TAILA
Irimedadi taila is specially prepared medicated oil. It is used for gargling. Five drops of Irimedadi taila should be mixed with a glassful of lukewarm water. It provides relief against throat itch and restores the voice.
VASHA & YASHTIMADHU POWDER
The patient needs to take this dose four times daily. A teaspoonful of this powder (made from Vasha and Yashtimadhu) is taken with a teaspoon of honey. It is quite effective against all general symptoms of voice hoarseness.
