Gout is known as Vatarakta in Ayurvedic terminology. Gout is painful. It is basically a metabolic ailment.
Gout Symptoms
Gout results in inflammation of the joints. Chalky deposits accumulate in the joints. However, Gout affects the toe first. The toe gets swollen and the syndrome is acutely painful. By and by, other joints of the body become affected. As a result, the patient experiences immense difficulty in moving, walking and even talking.
Causes of Gout
Gout happens due to malfunctioning of the metabolism process. Consumption of mutually contradictory food items and failure of the body to eliminate the metabolic waste products cause Gout.
Dietary Regimen
Patients suffering from Gout should regularly consume milk products, milk, sugarcane juice, cucumber, drumstick, moong dal, barley, patola, and old rice.
What not to eat
Such people must not eat sour food items and especially non-vegetarian items.
They should also not consume any vegetables that grow below the ground. Mention may be made of potato, radish and carrot etc.
What a gout patient should not do…
Don’t do any hard exercises or activities. Nor should such a person be a couch potato. A patient suffering from Gout must not take cold baths. Avoid getting exposed to rain or cold wind.
Control constipation
A gout patient should have regular movement of bowels. Such a condition is resolved with Haritaki.
The dose: Two teaspoonfuls mixed with warm water to be consumed at bedtime.
Constipation is resolved also by eating the decoction prepared from the root bark of Ashvattha tree.
The dose: The patient should daily consume 60 ml of the brew.
Ayurvedic Treatments
The Ayurvedic medications prescribed for Gout are Kaishora guggulu, a decoction prepared from Manjistha and Panchattka ghritta. For external use, there is Guduchyadi taila. This oil is prepared from Guduchi.
Kaishora Guggulu and Manjistha
This medication is tendered in the dose of five pills thrice daily. Thus a person should consume 15 tablets daily.
Then, it should be followed up with 60 ml of the Manjistha decoction.
Panchattka Ghritta
Panchattka ghritta is given to the patients to address Vata which is mainly responsible for causing Gout.
The dose: Two teaspoonfuls should be mixed with milk and taken twice daily. The medicine needs to be taken for at least a fortnight.
