In Ayurvedic terminology, Goitre is known as Galaganda. It occurs in the thyroid gland.
Goitre Symptoms
The main characteristic of Goitre is swelling in the front portion of the neck. The swelling becomes quite prominent with time. It may cause difficulty in respiration. The person may even have problems in swallowing drinks and food items.
Goitre is characterized by enlargement of the thyroid gland.
There are several types of Goitre. These are classified according to their affection levels.
Causes of Goitre
Goitre is caused due to the predominance of Kapha. As a result, the body lacks Pitta. This happens when the body suffers a deficiency in iodine. It is a fallout of the lack of iodine in one’s foods and drinks.
Dietary Regimen
Prepare the meals using iodised salt. Don’t use the common salt. In fact, all members of the family should consume iodised salt even if they do not suffer from Goitre.
Include in the menu of the patient the following items: Milk and milk products, barley, drumstick, patola, moong dal, and old rice besides cucumber and sugarcane juice.
What not to eat
Meat and sour food items should not be consumed by patients suffering from Goitre.
Exercise is must
Yes! the patient should regularly practise neck exercises.
Ayurvedic Treatments
The most commonly prescribed Ayurvedic medication is Kanchanara guggulu.
Decoction from Kanchanara bark
This medication is prepared from the bark of the Kanchanara tree. It comes in the form of a decoction.
The dose: The patient should consume 30 ml. of the decoction on an empty tummy twice daily.
Kanchanara Guggulu
Prepared from the Kanchanara tree, Kanchanara guggulu comes in the form of tablets.
The dose: Four pills thrice daily. The patient should then follow it up with a cup of warm water or milk.
