AILMENTS OF HAIR
This section on the ailments afflicting the human hair and skin has been divided into the following six sub-sections. Those write-ups on the hair ailments are (1) Hair greying; and (2) Baldness.
HAIR AILMENTS
1. GREYING OF HAIR
Hair can turn grey due to two reasons. One’s hair, for instance turns grey with age; At other times, various factors – malfunctioning of some essential organs or non-functioning of certain enzymes besides genetical, circumstantial, psychological and purely mental as well as physical – can lead to hair greying even among the kids and youths.
The Ayurvedic term for this condition of hair greying is Palitya.
TYPES OF HAIR GREYING
There are two main types of the hair greying syndrome. Many experience the hair greying syndrome at a particular portion of the scalp. In the other instance, hair greying can be happening equally all across the scalp.
THE AYURVEDIC INTERPRETATION
The Ayurvedic term for this condition of hair greying is Palitya.
According to the Ayurvedic principles, people with the Paittika type of constitution are vulnerable to this syndrome.
CAUSES OF THE HAIR GREYING SYNDROME
Hair greying can happen due to the following causes:
Greying of hair is caused by the following factors. In fact, they are the precipitating causes.
These factors are excessive psychic strain, anger and passion.
Some other causes of the hair greying syndrome are the following. People vulnerable to this condition are those suffering from sinusitis and chronic cold.
Even persons habituated to washing their hair in warm water fall easy victims to this condition.
Regular change in the water used for washing or bathing can also be another probable cause of the hair greying syndrome. This is typical of many professionals who have the touring type of job.
NATURAL GREYING OF HAIR CAN ALSO BE ARRESTED
The natural greying of hair can also be arrested through Yogic exercises and certain hygienic regimen. The procedures are explained in the Yogic section of our website.
Nonetheless, here we refer to the important points. Regular breathing (Pranayama) exercises and meditation besides, one should daily massage til (sesame) oil on the scalp before retiring for the night. Early in the morning, wash the hair with plain water.
Twice in a month, preferably on a Sunday when one is free from professional work, one should shampoo the scalp. These processes provide nourishment to the hair.
DIETARY REGIMEN
A person will be able to arrest the hair greying syndrome in their youth stage by following a strict dietary regimen.
Such people should restrict their menu to only sugar and milk.
WHAT NOT TO EAT
If you are suffering from this syndrome, avoid sour items like curd.
Similarly, stay away from pungent, fried, spicy and hot food items.
Try to minimise the consumption of salt.
OTHER IMPORTANT POINTS
As far as practicable, use cold water for bathing and especially for washing the hair.
Try to always stay away from all forms of tensions, passions, anxieties and worries.
Don’t remain awake late into the night.
Therefore, retire early at night and get up early in the morning.
If you suffer from sinusitis and cold, immediately treat these ailments.
AYURVEDIC TREATMENT
There are three very effective Ayurvedic medications. These are Bhallataka, Maha Bhringaraja taila, Amalaki and Bhringaraja.
BHALLATAKA
Bhallataka is generally tendered to patients in the form of linctus. The point to note is that Bhallataka has a slight allergic effect on many patients. Hence, Bhallataka Is carefully processed before consumption.
The Dose: One teaspoonful twice daily. The person concerned should follow the medication with a cup of warm milk.
BHRINGARAJA & AMALAKI OIL (MAHA BHRINGARAJA TAILA)
The oil of Amalaki and Bhringaraja are first boiled. Then, this concoction is allowed to cool down. It is now ready for use as scalp massaging oil. It is known as Maha Bhringaraja taila
OTHER MEDICATIONS
Maha Bhringaraja & Amalaki powder: Another potent preparation is the powdery mixture of these two natural ingredients.
The Dose: One teaspoonful mixed with milk should be consumed by the person thrice daily.
Neem oil: Such persons can also use neem oil for inhalation twice daily.
The Dose: This process should be continued for at least 30 day or a month for the optimum effects.
Note: The patient should regularly have a glass of cow’s milk.
