Hysteria is also termed Unmada (as Schizophrenia) in Ayurvedic terminology. It is also known as Yoshapasmara.

It has been found that women suffer more from this psychic condition compared to their male counterparts.

At times, children are also affected by this state of mind.

What exactly is Hysteria?

Hysteria is an emotion reaction. It is commonly manifested in the patient’s abnormal manner of acting out the distress(es) in dramatic and exaggerated forms.

The purpose is to attract the attention of the family members and thus gain sympathy.

The Symptoms

Mentionably, there may not be any clinical or anatomical symptoms.

Hysteria Causes

In chronic and extreme cases, the causes can be emotional and neurotic factors. The symptoms differ depending on the response to particular emotionally charged situation.

Each organ of the body is vulnerable to the psycho-somatic symptoms or diseases. Moreover, these may manifest as skin eruption, an allergy, or any types of physical or organic ailments.

The physical factors: The physical factors can be ulcers, indigestion, heartburn or hyper-acidity. The patient may suffer from an acute state of constipation, as the intestines can be affected.

On the other hand, the patient can also suffer from diarrhoea.

It can be caused also because of colitis accompanied by acute ulceration of the intestinal valve.

Dietary Regimen

Tender the patient lots of fruits like bananas, peaches, apples, oranges and mangoes;

Almond is especially beneficial for such patients;

Almond Oil Therapy

The almond oil therapy strengthens the nervous system.

The patient should regularly have almond oil at almond oil at bedtime.

The dose: One teaspoonful mixed with cup of milk.

What not to eat

The patient should never have spicy and hot food items.

Neither should the person have pulses and fried items.

Other important points

The ailment can be controlled and arrested ultimately only if the patient has a positive mindset.

Such mindsets can be developed only if the patients practise mind control.

The best means to boost this acumen is to regularly do the yogic asanas particularly the breathing exercises (pranayama) and the meditation postures in Padmasana.

Moreover, such persons should regularly practise wee hours morning walks.

It will improve the person’s will power which, in turn, will improve the chances of the person recovering from the condition.

Such patients should be kept in a homely atmosphere.

They should not be exposed to situations which are emotionally taxing.

Moreover, the patients should never be mentioned about the ailment.

Sound sleep at night is a must for these people so they have quick recovery.

Ayurvedic Treatments

The Ayurvedic treatments include Ashvagandharishta as well as the following four medications: Shankhapushpi; Vacha; Brahmi; and Sarpagandha. All of them are the drugs of choice for the treatment of this condition. These are recommended for patients suffering from all types of hysteria.

These medications directly address the emotional and neurotic conditions. As the medications start having their therapeutic effects, the adjunct symptoms automatically subside.

In extreme hysterical cases, the patients are also given cannabis.

Jatiphaladi Churna and Chronic Colitis

Mentionably, one of the main symptoms of hysteria is chronic colitis. Such patients are given Jatiphaladi churna. It relieves the patient’s mental tension and also cures colitis.

The dose: One teaspoonful of Jatiphaladi churna mixed with a cup of buttermilk thrice daily.

Ashvagandharishta Therapy

The Ashvagandharishta Therapy helps the patients gather sound sleep. Ashvagandharishta Therapy is especially beneficial for those people who suffer from chronic disturbed sleep or insomnia (sleeplessness).

Ashvagandharishta is a compound liquid preparation. The other ingredients include the powdery forms of Shankhapushpi, Vacha, and Brahmi. All these ingredients are mixed in equal quantities.

The dose: Six teaspoonfuls of Ashvagandharishta need to be mixed with equal quantities of water. The patient should have the medication twice daily after food.

If the patient is given Shankhapushpi, Vacha, and Brahmi instead of the therapy, the following dosage should be tendered:

The dose: One dose is made up of a gram of these mixtures. It should be mixed with a cup of milk and taken thrice daily.
