Arya Vaidya Sala Kottakkal (AVS), a charitable institution with over 120 years of history, is dedicated to the practice and promotion of Ayurveda, India’s ancient health care system. AVS offers classical Ayurvedic medicines, authentic treatments, and therapies to patients from India and abroad.

A Vision Rooted in Tradition

Established in 1902 by the visionary physician and philanthropist, the late Vaidyaratnam P.S. Varier, AVS began as a village clinic in Kottakkal, Kerala. Today, it has evolved into a multi-unit, multi-disciplinary, multi-functional, and multi-crore organization. The vision is to establish Arya Vaidya Sala as a global brand while maintaining the core aspiration: “To provide help and solace to the weak.” The holistic approach of Ayurveda promoted by AVS ensures harmony between individuals and their surroundings.

Facilities and Services

AVS operates three medicine manufacturing units at Kottakkal, Kanjikode, and Nanjangud, equipped with quality control labs producing over 550 classical and new generation formulations. Medical consultations and authentic medicines are accessible through 27 branches and around 2000 authorized dealers nationwide.

Specialized Treatments

AVS offers specialized treatments based on ancient Ayurvedic classics, effectively tailored to modern patients’ needs:

• Panchakarma: A series of five therapeutic procedures involving Vamana (emesis), Virechana (purgation), Vasti (enema), Nasya (nasal cleansing), and Raktamoksha (blood-letting). These treatments, requiring close supervision, are designed for disease treatment, rejuvenation, and overall well-being.
• Navarakizhi: This therapeutic massage uses boiled Navara rice bundles massaged on the body with medicated oil. It is beneficial for degenerative neuromuscular and musculoskeletal disorders.
• Dhara: Medicated oil or decoction is poured on the forehead, primarily used for neuro-psychiatric disorders such as stress, anxiety, and chronic conditions like dementia.
• Pizhichil: Warm medicated oil is poured on the body while giving a gentle massage, effective for inflammatory and degenerative joint disorders.
• Sirovasti: Medicated oil is retained within a leather cap on the head, effective for head, neck, ENT, and eye diseases.
• Tharpanam: A treatment for ophthalmological diseases involving medicated ghee poured into a paste socket around the eyes.

Research and Education

The Research & Development Department focuses on modernizing production and quality control of Ayurvedic drugs. The Centre for Medicinal Plants Research (CMPR), recognized by the Government of India, undertakes modern research on medicinal plants. AVS also supports educational initiatives through the Vaidyaratnam P.S. Varier Ayurveda College, offering undergraduate and postgraduate courses in Ayurveda.

Cultural Contributions

The P.S.V. Natyasangham, founded by Vaidyaratnam P.S. Varier, stages Kathakali performances in India and abroad. AVS conducts annual Ayurveda seminars and competitions to strengthen the knowledge base of Ayurveda professionals and students.
