Ayurveda Drug Nomenclature Technique

Ayurveda takes into account the following six elements while christening any of its drugs. They are:

1.PLANT SEGMENT USED:

One of the nomenclature rules is to name the medicine after the name of the plant part or segment that is utilized for preparation of the particular drug. Take for instance the Ayurvedic medication ‘Dashamula Kashaya’. The Sanskrit term ‘Dashamula’ means root. Therefore, this medication is prepared from the root of the plant.

2.DRUG QUANTITY:

The constitution of an Ayurvedic drug can be learnt by analysing the name of the drug. Example: ‘Shatpala ghrita’ where ‘Shat’ means seven; ‘pala’ means natural items; and ‘ghrita’ connotes a judicious mixture.

3.MAIDEN INGREDIENT:

Ayurvedic medications are named also according to the first ingredient used in a particular formula. An instance is ‘Pippalyasava’.

4.PIONEER’S NAME:

Drugs are at times also named after the name of the discoverer of the particular Ayurvedic formula. Example: ‘Agastya haritiki’. The discoverer of this drug is the sage, Agastya.

5.PRIMARY INGREDIENT:

Another nomenclature rule is to use the name of the primary or the main ingredient of the medication. Mention can be made of Amalaki-rasayana. The main ingredient of this drug is the natural fruit ‘Amalaki’.

6.THERAPEUTIC QUALITY:

Ayurvedic drugs are also named after the disease for which the medication is recommended. Example: The medication ‘Kusthaghna lepa’ is named after the disease ‘kustha’ or leprosy.
