‘Pyorrhoea‘ is known in Ayurveda as Putidanta or Dantaveshta. It is that typical syndrome when there are excessive discharges of pus from the roots of gums and teeth. There are several types of Pyorrhoea – each one is differentiated according to the exact portion of the gums or teeth from which pus oozes out.
PYORRHOEA CAUSES PREMATURE AGING & MANY AILMENTS
Unless cured at the initial stages, Pyorrhoea – or more exactly the pus – can lead to various diseases. It, in turn, causes premature aging.
This happens because the patient swallows the pus along with the food articles. The consumed pus then gets absorbed into the gastro-intestinal system.
PYORRHOEA SYMPTOMS
The common symptoms of pyorrhoea are many. They are as follows: Foul smell in mouth; teeth become loose and start falling one after another; difficulty in chewing solid food ingredients; gum paining and bleeding. Some symptoms like indigestion and constipation can also be the causes of pyorrhoea.
CAUSES OF PYORRHOEA
A clean mouth (including the gums, teeth and tongue) is the indicator of a healthy body and of course, the mind. The mouth is also the grooming ground for many germs and Pyorrhoea is caused by infection, courtesy: various germs. Hence, Ayurveda underlines the need for proper mouth (teeth, gums and tongue) cleaning habits.
It also stresses on regular bowel movements and proper functioning of the entire digestive tract including the liver and the colon. The other primary causes of Pyorrhoea. are:
1. Constipation;
2. Indigestion; and
3. Unhygienic oral habits.
DIETARY REGIMEN
Consume vegetables having bitter taste. Such food items are drumstick, patola or paruwal and bitter gourd (karela).
2. Similarly include in your dietary menu fruits and vegetables containing Vitamin C. Mention may be made of pomengranate, amalaki (Indian goose berry), and guava. But do keep away from other sour food items
3. Certain other fruits are also quite useful. They are cucumber, papaya, and apple.
WHAT NOT TO CONSUME
1. Don’t consume food items that stick to teeth or their roots.
2. Avoid curd, pickles, and sour fruits excepting the ones mentioned above.
POINTS TO REMEMBER
Ayurveda always recommends proper oral hygiene. One should always brush one’s teeth and gums after the three major meals. In case one is very busy during the daytime, make it a habit to atleast brush after rising up from the bed in the morning and also before retiring at night.
Make a habit of drinking five full glasses of water before answering the first call of nature in the morning. It not only cures constipation but also makes bowel movements easier.
Here are certain other tips:
1.Choose a soft toothbrush;
2.Opt for tooth powder or toothpaste that lacks too many chemical components;
3.Always gargle after consuming anything;
4.To avoid flatulence, don’t drink water in between meals;
5.Wait for atleast 30 minutes after finishing each meal. Then, drink a minimum number of three glasses of water.
6.Sit in the Yogic Vajrasana posture after the major meals;
7.Avoid filling up the tummy with only the food items;
8.One should fill only 50% of the tummy with food items;
9.The remaining portion should be filled up with water.
10.Gulp down just six grains of rice after washing them with a glass of water after brushing your teeth. You won’t have gastric troubles even if you have skip lunch!
SUBSTITUTE NYLON TOOTHBRUSHES
Ayurveda, however, recommends for its patients the prop-root of a banyan tree in the place of a nylon toothbrush. Here’s the method to choose the fresh prop-root of the banyan tree:
1. Choose a banyan prop-root whose diameter is of approximately 10 cm. That’s the width of an ordinary new pencil;
2. One can also opt for the tender branches or twigs of other fibery trees like neem.
3. Then, chew one end of the root for about three minutes. This transforms the root into a fine brush.
4. The chewing process acts like an exercise for the gums. It squeezes out the accumulated pus from the roots of the teeth.
NOTE: The milk or latex that oozes out of the banyan prop-root possesses an antiseptic property. It checks pus formation. Its astringent property prevents bleeding.
AYURVEDIC TREATMENTS FOR PYORRHOEA
Ayurveda recommends two medications to cure pyorrhoea. They are Dashana samskara churna and the powdered forms of the barks of Babula and Bakula trees.
DASHANA SAMSKARA CHURNA
Dashana samskara churna is the most commonly prescribed medication against pyorrhoea. It is available in the powdery form. It removes the foul smell of the mouth. If used regularly for a fortnight, bleeding and pus formation is also checked. Even though the pyorrhoea symptoms subside, the patient should keep on using this powder for atleast three months thereafter. Nonetheless, one can definitely use this powder as one’s permanent toothpowder as well.
Prescription: The patient should use this powder to clean the teeth and the gums. It should be used with a soft brush. However, Ayurveda recommends the tip of the right index finger to clean the teeth using this powder mixed with water.
BABULA & BAKULA BARK POWDER
The powder made from the dried barks of Babula and Bakula trees is an ideal antiseptic toothpowder. It is natural and has no side effects. All pyorrhoea conditions are arrested if used twice daily – once in the morning and the second time at night.
