Ayurvedic and Unani Tibbia College: A Historic Institution in New Delhi

The Ayurvedic and Unani Tibbia College and Hospital in New Delhi is a historic institution renowned for integrating both Ayurvedic and Unani medical streams under one roof. This unique institution, originally established as ‘Madrasa e Tibia’ in 1883 by Hazeek-ul-Mulk Hakim Abdul Majeed Khan Sahib, has a rich legacy of promoting traditional medicine.

Historical Background

The college was formally inaugurated on July 23, 1889, by the then Deputy Commissioner of Delhi, Shri R. Clarke. Initially, modern medicine and science were part of the syllabus. The institution was later relocated to a new building in Karol Bagh by Masih-ul-Mulk Hakim Ajmal Khan Sahib. The foundation stone was laid by His Excellency Lord Hardinge, the then Viceroy of India, on March 29, 1916. The institution was inaugurated by Mahatma Gandhi on February 13, 1921.

Campus and Facilities

Situated in central Delhi (Karol Bagh), the college and its 300-bed hospital are housed in three buildings: the administrative wing, academic wing, and hospital wing, reflecting a blend of Mughal and British architecture. The expansive 33.33-acre campus includes a herbal garden, boys’ and girls’ hostels, a mini stadium, and staff quarters.

Administrative Evolution

The college and its allied units were initially managed by a board established under the Tibia College Act, 1952. This act was later revised as the Delhi Tibia College (Take Over) Act, 1998, placing the institution under the administration of the NCT of Delhi Government from May 1, 1998.

Educational Programs

The co-educational institution offers undergraduate courses in BAMS (Bachelor of Ayurvedic Medicine and Surgery) and BUMS (Kamil e Tibet O Jarahat – Bachelor of Unani Medicine and Surgery), both of which are five years long, including a one-year compulsory rotary internship.
